Must Be the Water by Eric Nelson
The train rumbled into the subway station on the corner, sending trembles throughout the room where Billy slept. He rolled over on the air mattress and lay on his stomach, eyes darting under their lids. The apartment shook again as the train pulled out.
“Goddamn cat,” his voice full of sleep.
Eric Nelson is an emerging writer originally from New Jersey, the son of a nurse and machinist. He has written for publications such as “Constellation” and “Zine World” and wrote the zine series “The Silk City Series,” which is now a book of short stories from Knickerbocker Circus Publishing. Heavily involved in the New York City DIY print culture, he works at ABC No Rio’s Zine Library, has read in various bookstores and festivals in the Northeast, prints a zine called “The Cup and Saucer Chronicles” and is currently at work on his debut novel. He’s a combination of Black Flag and Raymond Carver. He can usually be found laughing loudly at something inappropriate. He lives in Queens and he loves it.

The Cat Came Back by C. Martinez
Stephen cried when Maggie gave his cat away without asking him. She
was sick of it leaving hair on his lap. With the barrier between them
gone, Maggie could breathe.
Stephen seemed okay.
They took in Alice when her parents summered without her.
Sweet sixteen now, and on his lap.
Chris Martinez is a jittery, three-pot-of-tea-a-day addicted piano teacher who lives in the suburbs of Denver, Colorado. Writing is a hobby of hers and a way to relieve the chattering voices in her head. She does not want to imagine what would happen if she never let anything out.

“I can’t believe you punched your girlfriend’s brother in the nose,” my sister said.
“She’s not my girlfriend anymore.”
“Do you blame her?”
“No, I blame Mom. She’s the one making us move again, after just getting settled in. I am just making leaving easier for all of us.”
Joe Graf lives in Cary, NC where he helps craft videogames at Epic Games. When not spending time with his children, he reads and writes as much as he can.
